The NBA All Star Game, and College Basketball

All writers and blogger have different styles and don't always see eye to eye when it comes to a sporting game or event. Three different articles written about the NBA all star game, the Tennessee vs Kentucky game, and Virginia Tech vs Virginia, allowed me to see how other people reiterate the action during a game.

All three games recapped what happened during the game, but all in different ways using multiple techniques.

Written by Colin Ward-Henninger and Jack Maloney on CBS Sports, they compare how last season's all star game was different and more competitive this year that previous seasons. They move into Kevin Durant winning the MVP, how Lebron is still able to take a game over, some fun plays like alley-oops and other dunks, and Dirk's three point garage.

Kentucky and Tennessee's author Wayne Staats from NCAA.com broke down the action in a much different way. Every five minutes he would mention the time, and how the game has progressed along with the scoring leader or something noteworthy besides what happened. Also, he described the SEC race and how the SEC is shaping up with the regular season coming to a close soon, and used some humor in the article as well.

The last article was about the Virginia Tech, Virginia game from 247sports by Chris Arvin. He forecasted the remaining schedule for Virginia Tech and recapped the game with statistics and even a little humor. The author begins the article with the end result but dives into the second half action and strays away from the first half for the most part.

There were many similarities that I liked and dislikes from the three articles and authors.

They all were able to use visual aid to enhance their article, and each writer broke the paragraphs down into smaller pieces. Their sentences and thoughts were effectively distributed to keep you focused and engaged.

More so for the first two articles I mention, I thought they were more descriptive and gave more information and statistics that backed up what they were saying. They both had more sections to the game that made you think about and remember the exact play. In addition they had many more pictures and videos and were more specific about key plays and moments.

Each of the three articles I talk about, have a couple flaws in my opinion, but not as many as the last.

The NBA article would have been more fun to read if it had not been spread out. It was frustrating to keep scrolling through multiple empty spaces to get to the next best play or description. Next, the Kentucky article was awkward to read because each sentence for the most part was two to three lines. This was fine at first, but then made it difficult once the author added new sections to the article every five minutes of the game. In addition, he added the statistics in between the recap and the five minute summary. At first, I wasn't sure if the article had ended or not.

Finally, Virginia Tech. Personally, I was not a fan of the introduction. I was not hooked by the it and if it wasn't for this assignment, I would have clicked off to find a different one. It starts the action too late and I wish it described more of the first half because I wasn't able to watch the first half. The game was closer in the first than the second half despite the final score being a six point difference. They're wasn't a lot of flow and buildup like I read I the first two articles.

Every writer is different, and is entitled to write in their own way. Not all readers will read the articles the same way either, but every consumer wants to read about the same thing when they visit your site. These three writers showed different approaches and styles that are more and less efficient in the eyes of different readers.
